A family owned safari company

Most safaris are sold. Ours are designed around you.

Safari Plains Africa Ltd is a registered Kenyan tour operator, run by the Kiungu family in Nairobi, building tailor made journeys across Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda since 2012.

Our founding belief

The safari industry asks the wrong question

The usual question is which package fits your dates and budget. The right question is what you want this journey to feel like. A once in a lifetime celebration. A family adventure that keeps three generations happy. A quiet return to the bush after too long away.

When a safari is built for a product instead of a person, the result is predictable. You tick the boxes. You take the photographs. You leave unable to say exactly what was missing. We started Safari Plains Africa to do the opposite: to design every trip around the person travelling, not the average buyer.

A safari should feel like it was made for exactly one person. Because it was.

Our story

From banking discipline to bush passion

01

Over a decade in finance

Basil Kiungu Mwakulomba built a career in banking, culminating in a Regional Audit Director role at ABN AMRO. That background taught him how to read a contract, manage risk and hold suppliers accountable. It also gave him a clear view of what happens when service becomes a process instead of a relationship.

02

A lifetime of travel

Beyond the office, Basil travelled widely across East and Central Africa, visiting every national park he could reach. He saw the difference between a guide who reads the land and one who simply drives it. Between a camp chosen for commission and a camp chosen for care.

03

Safari Plains Africa is born

In 2012 the company was registered and the family set up operations in Nairobi. The idea was simple: bring banking discipline to an industry that often runs on charm, and bring human care to an industry that often runs on spreadsheets. KATO membership and a growing fleet of owned 4WDs followed.

What we stand for

Six convictions that shape every itinerary

I

Family owned, family run

Safari Plains Africa Ltd is a registered Kenyan tour operator run by the Kiungu family from Nairobi. Decisions are made around a kitchen table, not in a distant boardroom, and the same people who design your trip are the ones who answer the phone when you land.

II

We know the industry from the inside

Our Managing Director, Basil Kiungu Mwakulomba, spent over a decade in banking and finance before turning a lifelong passion for travel into Safari Plains Africa. That discipline shows up in how we inspect camps, negotiate with suppliers and protect value for money on every quote.

III

A safari is personal

We do not believe in off-the-shelf packages. A honeymoon, a family reunion, a first trip to Africa and a return visit all deserve different answers. We start with what matters to you, then build the itinerary around it.

IV

The guide makes the difference

The right guide turns a drive into a story. Our silver and gold rated KPSGA guides are salaried year round, not seasonal hires. They know the Mara, Amboseli, Samburu and the Serengeti because they live and breathe them.

V

Transparency, not hidden margins

On a typical Kenya itinerary roughly a quarter of what you pay goes straight to conservancy landowners, park authorities and camp staff within a week. We show you the split because we have nothing to hide.

VI

Presence from first email to airport farewell

You will deal with one specialist from the first conversation through to the final night. No call centre, no handoffs, no explaining yourself twice. When something changes on the ground, we are reachable.

Our management

The person behind your trip is at the same table as the founder

Basil Kiungu Mwakulomba leads Safari Plains Africa as Managing Director. With a background in finance and decades of travel across East and Central Africa, he brings both rigour and passion to every itinerary the company designs.

Where the money goes

We show you the split on every quote

On a typical nine-day Kenya itinerary, roughly a quarter of what you pay leaves our hands within a week to conservancy landowners, park authorities and camp staff. That is not a hidden margin. It is the reason the wilderness stays wild.
